Join us Saturday, September 20th for the 3rd annual “Night Without A Home” Sleep Out to benefit the Quad Cities “Partners in Caring” Assistance Fund

“Night Without A Home” Sleep Out is an event intended to raise awareness of homelessness and poverty within our community by sleeping outside on Saturday, Sept 20 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Virginia. The night will be filled with powerful learning experiences and fun. In addition to sleeping outside, participants will understand what it’s like to be homeless from community members who have been there as well as learning about some of the causes of homelessness and solutions from advocates who work to help our most vulnerable neighbors.

Achieve Scholarship Program

The new Achieve Scholarship program is designed to address two critical barriers to college attendance: lack of academic preparation and financial access. High school graduates who complete any one of four sets of courses defined as rigorous earn a one-time scholarship of $1,200 to help pay for college at a public or private university or college. The Achieve scholarship, which was proposed by Governor Tim Pawlenty in January 2007 and signed into law in May, is available to students who graduate after January 1, 2008.
To be eligible, a student must:
*Have a parental adjusted gross income of less than $75,000 reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the academic year during which the scholarship is requested (this limit also applies to the adjusted gross income reported for independent students)
*Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
*Meet the definition of Minnesota resident used for state financial aid programs
*Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
*Attend an eligible public or private postsecondary institution in Minnesota.
*Apply for the scholarship no later than 30 days after the term starts
*Successfully complete the first term of college enrollment in order to receive the second $600 installment of the Achieve Scholarship
*Complete one of the four sets of rigorous programs of study while in high school or in a home-school setting described below

Rigorous Programs of Study

1. A set of courses similar to the State Scholars Initiative with a grade of 'C' or above in each course:
*Four years of English;
*Three years of math (including Algebra I and a higher level course such as Algebra II, geometry, or data analysis and statistics);
*Three years of science (including at least two courses from biology, chemistry or physics);
*Three years of social studies; and
*One year of a foreign language.

2. Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and test scores:
This program requires a minimum of two Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses in high school and a minimum passing score on the exams for those classes. Students must score 3 or higher on AP exams and 4 or higher on IB exams.

3. Minnesota Coursework Requirements with a grade of 'C' or above in each course:
*Four years of language arts;
*Three years of math, including one year each of geometry and two years of algebra, one of which is intermediate or advanced algebra;
*Three years of science including one year each of a biological and physical science;
*Three years of social studies; and
*Two years of a single foreign language.

4. Minnesota Dual Credit Program:
With a passing grade of 'B' or better: High school students taking BOTH a math course (Algebra 2 level or higher) AND a science course (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) under the Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program worth a total of at least 6 college credits.

How to Apply
Students must first graduate from high school
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Download and complete the Achieve Scholarship application (.pdf)
Submit the application to the Office of Higher Education along with an official high school transcript

Book Fair

A book fair was held at the Library from 2-4PM. Many books were donated and the cost to take them home? A cash donation to Bill's House (homeless shelter in Virginia) and / or a food donation to the Quad Cities Foodshelf in Gilbert.

Thanks for the support from the community. Food was donated and over $100 was raised for Bill's House!!!!!

PUCK (Patrick / Urho Community Kinship) Days

Let's get together for a weekend of exciting events in Eveleth to celebrate our cultures and heritage

Friday night, March 14th (6-8PM at Hoagie's): Pull out your pots, chili powder, chili peppers, or just your antacids for a chili cook-off. Cook your secret recipe to put into the contest or come to sample the chili to help determine the Chili Cook-off Champion.

SATURDAY, MARCH 15TH:

Beginning at 10AM come to the sliding hill for a "Family Sliding Day" sponsored by Arrowhead DARE.

There will be hot dogs, chips, hot chocolate.

Don't have a sled? Several extra sleds will be available for use.

Beginning at 11AM:

Come to Southside park to see Antique, Vintage, and Modern snowmobiles. Trophies will be distributed at 12:30.

Want to be in a winter parade? There will be snow lining part of the street so we can demonstrate our winter heritage: Want to snowshoe, ski, snowmobile, pull children in a sled, run a dog sled team? Want to pull your fish house, but it's on wheels? That's okay, the snow will only be on a portion of the street so all types of floats/units can be in the parade. If interested in being in the parade, line up will begin at 11AM at Southside Park. If you can't make it at 11, that's okay, you can line up anytime prior to the start of the parade.

Not interested in being in the parade? Come and watch - the parade route will go down Grant from Fayal to Jones.

Beginning at 2:00 come to the Quilt show / Craft Fair at the Eveleth Senior Citizens Center.

Also beginning at 2PM: BOOK FAIR

Come to the library for a book fair. The cost? A food donation or cash donation. Food donations will be given to the Quad Cities Food shelf and the cash donations will be given to Bill's House (the local shelter). Get books and help out the community at the same time.

Have books you would like to donate? You can bring them to the Eveleth Library and let them know they are for the Eveleth Horizons book fair.

After the parade: JACKPINE BOCCE BALL
