Free Dental Care Provided to Minnesota Children In Need

Minnesota Dental Association's Give Kids a Smile program to host free dental clincis.

On Feb. 5 and 6, dentists will volunteer their time to help thousands of low-income children who are not getting the dental care they need and deserve. Each year, the program provides about $1.7 million worth of free care to more than 5,000 children. More than 200 clinics across the state participate. Again this year, the MDA is asking for your help. Please tell families aboutGive Kids a Smile and help ensure they know how to make an appointment for their child.

Here is what families should know about Give Kids a Smile:

After Jan. 1, parents can find local participating dental offices by visiting the MDA Web site or calling United Way 2-1-1 (just dial 211). Cell phone users can call 651-291-0211. Toll free is 1-800-543-7709. Parents then call the dental office to make an appointment.
Each child must have an appointment and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Services vary from clinic to clinic. When calling to make an appointment, we encourage parents to talk with the clinic about any specific needs or concerns.
Families are asked to respect the clinic's time and dedication. For every child who doesn't show up for his or her appointment, another child could have been helped. If the family must cancel, they should give the clinic at least a day's notice.
In the weeks before the child's appointment, families or teachers should read age-appropriate books to familiarize the child with what to expect during their dental exam. School or community libraries should have some good selections.
On the day before the appointment, families should drive by the dental clinic together with their child. Just driving past the clinic helps ensure families know where the clinic is located and helps the child visualize - and feel more confident about - where he or she will visit the dentist.

To Promote the program: You can help spread the word about Give Kids a Smile in your community through the MDA Web site, where you will find classroom take-home fliers as well as color fliers. You are invited to download, print and distribute these materials, and also pass this information with your networks. 2nd Annual Food Drive

Santa joined the Eveleth Fire Department and Ambulance Service in collecting food for the 2009 food drive on Thursday December 3rd. Promptly at 6pm Santa left the Fire Station along with all his dedicated men and women who serve Eveleth, they were up and down the streets of Eveleth and West Eveleth. After the collection they dropped off all the donations at North Country Christian Center, where they were eagerly greeted by the many volunteers waiting to sort the donations.

Services available will include maternal and child health, prenatal appointments, yearly physicals, and free non-emergency medical services. Appointments are required by calling 218-727-3399. These services are of no cost to you and require no insurance.

How to prevent and prepare for the H1N1

With all the information and misinformation in the media about the swine flu, it's good to know the facts and how to prepare for it. When you hear the term "pandemic" it is not bound to a certain number of cases, but defined by human-to-human transmission in three different countries in two different WHO regions.

Prevention

Know what the signs of swine flu are in people. The symptoms look a lot like an ordinary flu and include fever (greater than 100°F or 37.8°C), cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. It is reported that diarrhea and vomiting can also be included with the symptoms of illness. There's no way to tell if you have the swine flu unless a respiratory specimen is taken within the first 4-5 days and sent to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (or equivalent).
Make sure you are in good health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress,drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Consider taking a Vitamin C & D supplement. The healthier you are, the better your immune system will be at defending your body against a virus.
Practice good hygiene. If you sneeze, keep a disposable tissue in front of your mouth, after sneezing or blowing your nose throw the tissue away. Wash your hands often, especially if after blowing your nose/sneezing and before you eat. Use a disinfectant when possible or just use soap and water.
Don't share utensils or drinks. In cafeteria settings, it's not uncommon for people to casually share utensils or take a sip from someone else's drink. This should be completely avoided if there is any risk of a flu pandemic.

Preparation

If a pandemic flu virus spreads rapidly, being prepared to stay at home will help slow down the virus because you'll minimize your exposure (and other people's exposure to you, if you become sick

Stock up. Store nonperishable foods, bottled water, over-the-counter drugs, health supplies and other necessities. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends having a 2-week supply. (These supplies can be useful in other types of emergencies, such as power outages.) Have basic, over-the-counter health supplies such as a thermometer, facemasks, tissues, soap, hand sanitizers, medicine to relieve fever, and cold medicine.
Plan ahead. Plan for what you will do in the following cases:
Schools dismissed:
You or family member becomes sick and requires care: Plan to stay home for at least 10 days when you are sick with pandemic flu. Staying home will keep you from infecting others. Make sure others in your household also stay home when they are sick. During a severe pandemic, stay home if someone in your household is sick with pandemic flu.
Talk to your employer.
Use Technology.
Stay updated.

If we prepare and use prevention there is no need to panic. If you know your neighbor is sick ask if there is anything they may need so they don't have to go out and infect others, plus it's a nice thing to do

Winter Driving Tips

As you know winter is making it's presence known a little early this year. This is a good reminder to keep us and our families safe this season.

The best advice for driving in bad winter weather is not to drive at all, if you can avoid it.

Don't go out until the snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work, and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination.

If you must drive in snowy conditions, make sure your car is prepared , and that you know how to handle road conditions.

It's helpful to practice winter driving techniques in a snowy, open parking lot, so you're familiar with how your car handles. Consult your owner's manual for tips specific to your vehicle.

Driving safely on icy roads

Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
Keep your lights and windshield clean.
Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.

If your rear wheels skid...

Take your foot off the accelerator.
Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.
If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.

If your front wheels skid...

Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.
As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.

If you get stuck...

Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

How to Preserve Your Carved Pumpkin to Make It Last Longer!

A little simple Halloween magic with household items will make your Jack O'Lantern last a week longer!

Essentially, we're going to embalm your Jack O'Lantern, just like the ancient Egyptians did their mummies! (Hey, maybe they practiced on pumpkins!)

Here are the simple steps:

Remove dirt: Wipe the exterior surfaces of the pumpkin clean using a damp cloth.
Make a bleach solution of1 tablespoon of bleach (typical brand name "Clorox) per quart of water and put it in a spray bottle.
Spray the pumpkin inside and all cut areas of the pumpkin with the solution. This will kill much of the surface bacteria and mold that cause rotting.
Let it penetrate and dry for about 20 minutes
Next, rub all of the carved or cut surfaces with petroleum jelly. This will keep out new bacteria and molds as well as dramatically reduce the dehydration!
Wipe away excess with a paper towel!
Now, keep your pumpkin out of direct sunlight and try to keep it as cool as possible (but above freezing!) and you should get at least a week's enjoyment out of it!

Battering on women is the most under reported crime in America.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the United States.

One woman is beaten by her husband or partner every 15 seconds in the United States.

About 1 out of 4 women are likely to be abused by a partner in her lifetime.

Domestic Violence is a violent confrontation between family or household members involving physical harm, sexual assault, or fear of physical harm. Family or household members include spouses / former spouses, those in (or formerly in) a dating relationship, adults related by blood or marriage, and those who have a biological or legal parent-child relationship.

Domestic violence destroys families and communities. No one deserves to be abused. The responsibility for the violence belongs to the abuser. It is not the victim's fault!

How you can help:

1. Take a zero tolerance attitude-If you see it, hear it~Call the police and report it, even if it means you have to do it multiple times.
2. Talk about Domestic Violence with family and friends.~ Keeping it hush, hush, hurts the victims.
3. Drop off unwanted cell phones w/chargers at RWA~ They are used so victims of Domestic Violence can call 911.

I had the honor of bringing my daughter to her first fireworks and it is an event that we plan to make an annual tradition. I remember going to the parade when I was young and brought her to her first parade. It is so fun to pass down those traditions from my childhood to my daughter.

This is only possible due to the hard work and dedication of so many community members. Thanks to the organizers, volunteers, and the sponsors. You do great work!

Citizen science is the general term being applied to what happens when people investigate the cultural and natural history of their areas and then report there findings. You will discover the many projects already available and the growing interest in groups like the Minnesota Master Naturalists and the Ely Field Naturalists.

It started back in May with a clean up of the Northside park. June kicked off with painting of the pots in Monroe Park, followed by planting of flowers at Monroe Park, Eveleth Public Library, and Eveleth City Hall.

It’s America’s Night Out against Crime! "Turn their lights on to turn off crime."

National Night Out is designed to:
Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and
Fighting back.

· Started in 1984 with 400 communities in 23 states
· Started with “lights on” and front porch vigils

Summer hunger could increase for Northland families already struggling

Typically when school ends for the year, thousands of Northland children face a long summer without a consistent source of balanced, nutritious meals – their free and reduced school breakfast and lunch. This year could be especially difficult as families continue to struggle throughout our region.

“Already this year, use at NE MN and NW WI 35 food shelves has increased 32% by children,” said Shaye Moris, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank’s executive director. “Families have been hit hard by the economic downturn and many programs have seen record demand for food or other services. Summer could be really difficult.”

Each month in our region over 4,300 children receive food or meals from the food bank, a local food shelf, soup kitchen or youth program. Again, that’s a 32% increase from just a year ago.
Many local food shelves, soup kitchens and youth programs in the Northland strive to combat childhood hunger year-round, but encounter obstacles as the demand for food increases during the summer months.

The Damiano Center which operates a Kids Café© meal program has seen a big jump in the number of children coming for meals. “As recently as a couple of years ago, we prepared for 250 to 300 people at lunch; this summer we’re expecting 400 at each meal,” said Damiano Executive Director David Benson. “This is particularly challenging as we enter the summer months, which always bring higher numbers. Many people experience greater need this time of year.”
To ensure no children go without meals this summer, Moris states that the food bank, its 140 member agencies, and Northland families need the support of the region.

“The community can make a difference,” Moris states. “Financial assistance allows the rescue of food and the feeding of families—volunteer support ensures the operation of our programs. The irony is that childhood hunger is a solvable problem. Our food bank’s goal and the goal of our agencies is to provide nutritious food so children do not have to skip or reduce the size of their meals to ensure their families have enough food to eat.”

As the region’s only food bank, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank rescues
2.9 million pounds of nationally and regionally donated food for distribution to 140 regional non-profit programs located throughout its northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin service region annually. Over 1 million pounds of food (enough food for 800,000 meals) is rescued and distributed by the food bank to children in our region each year.

Spring Cleaning is in the Air

The City of Eveleth's Spring 2009 Clean-up is in full swing!

If you have household appliances or rubbish, furniture, old tires, old batteries, etc. that need to be disposed of, the City Garage will be accepting these items from April 20, to May 15. The hours for the drop off are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Extended hours, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, will be offered from April 27 through May 8, 2009.

Have yard waste to dispose of? The City Garage will accept yard waste until October 30, 2009.

There are options for those who need assistance transporting items to the garage. For further information check out the notice provided in your April utility bill or call 744-7504.

Keep in mind fees may be waived for those with limited income.

Symptoms and Cures for Spring Fever Blues

Like the confused plants, peepers and other sleepy wildlife, I cannot resist waking early from hibernation. The moment it reaches fifty degrees, I long for those days to walk barefoot across the soft green grass, no longer staring out the kitchen window feeling the symptoms of spring fever pangs. I'm no long satisfied with my lazy listless feelings of not giving a crap.

With symptoms of spring fever at epidemic levels, a change of pace sounds rather appealing.

If you're feeling blue and think you may be suffering from symptoms of spring fever, rest assured you are not alone. There are many ways of overcoming symptoms of spring fever blues.

Cures for Spring Fever Blues

Ok, it's time to get the blood flowing. Come out from your winter hibernation and get active. I am certain being active is a good cure if you have cabin fever or the spring fever blues.

This is a good time of year to get out and explore. Take a hike in the woods or do a nature walk with your friends and family. Listen very carefully to the sounds of spring all around you like the soft spring breeze rustling through the leaves, or water flowing and birds singing all while you get some fun and healthy exersise to cure your spring fever blues.

Ten more Tips to Cure Spring Fever Blues

I. Inhale the rich earthy smell of the ground or the early blooms like the gardenias. Pick them, bring them into your home and float them in bowls of water around the house. This makes for a heavenly sight and scent to cure your spring fever blues.

2. Open up your windows and let in the warm fresh air and the sweet spring aromas of the early tree blossoms. One of my favorites is the lilac. It reminds me of home when growing up. Make everything smell fresh and clean. Notice all the bright spring colors and sweet fragrances all around, outside and in.

3. On the next warm day get outside and enjoy the nice weather. Fire up the grill and make some picnic goodies like hotdogs and hamburgers. Then treat yourself to your favorite ice cream.

4. If "old man winter" is still around where you live why not give indoor gardening a try. Plant a windowsill herb garden, make a terrarium, build a birdfeeder or hand paint some flower pots.

5. Put away your winter decorations and liven up your home with a fresh coat of paint and buy yourself some beautiful houseplants or a bouquet of fresh flowers or change the room around to keep you busy and to give you a change of scenery for a sure spring fever cure.

6. Add a touch of spring with brightly colored pillows of pinks, yellows, and white to accent your rooms and to add some cheer.

7. Hang some fun and colorful pictures or posters of your favorite beach or flower or whatever else turns you on. Tropical beaches are my favorites. Whatever makes you happy!

8. It may not be warm enough for the beach right now but listening to some reggae or Hawaiian music can help you daydream of those gentle winds with the warmth of the sun shining on your hair and skin.

9. There are a variety of resources at your Eveleth library that will help relieve the symptoms of spring fever. Check out the videos and DVD travelogues. Check out the travel guides and make plans for your summer vacation. If you like gardening now is the time to read from the vast collection of gardeningbooks. Choose a book of interest and do read to your hearts content.

10. This ones my favorite Owe-it-to-yourself day is a cure for spring fever and a good way to clear your mind of life expectations and breathe new life into it. Be good at shaking your life up from time to time. Dream Big! Dream the Impossible Dream!

Eveleth PUCK Bonsai Tea Events

Bonsai Tea hosted a slew of festive events for Saturday, March 14th. They started with keynote speaker Harry Lamppa discussing how St. Urho expelled the grasshopper from Finland and moved on to 'Blues' music by Blew Reed and Lil' Dicky Window and finished with open stage.

Patrons sit and listen to the music of Little Dicky Window and Blue Reed while enjoying a good brew.

On Saturday, March 14th the Eveleth Public Library hosted, "Reading to the Dogs". Area youngsters were able to read a good book to a therapy dog. Some were read the book in the company of the cute furry friends.

The Library also hosted a Wells Fargo booth for the children to learn about saving money. Fun was had by all and all left with a little something to start them on their savings way!

Over a hundred families came out to enjoy the day!

The handy Arrowhead DARE chef provided free hotdogs, cocoa, and chips for everyone's enjoyment.

On Friday, March 13th Hoagies Hosted an incredible chili cook-off from 6-8 p.m.
There were 5 chili entries and 37 votes cast for the "favorite chili".

The process was to taste one sort of chili, have crackers to cleanse the palate, try another chili, ..... A giant thank you to all 37 of you that were able to sample the chili recipes and provide a vote for the best chili and the others that just came to sample and visit.

Proposed changes

The proposed budget cuts by the governor are very real and closely affect members of our community. Here are 2 stories of how the proposed changes would affect lifes. Both presented this to the legislators that met at MRCTC on Friday:

"Hi my name is Lindsey. I am a working single mother with 2 children.

When I had my son I could work only one full time job and barely made ends meet. With rent, utility, food and childcare I would run out of money at the middle of the month. A friend told me about MFIP for the food and childcare, and thanks to MFIP I have a little money for diapers, wipes, and clothes for my kids. I tried going back to college but there were no openings for childcare and my friends couldn’t provide reliable daycare with their changing schedules so I had to quit school. I grew up in foster care so I don’t have family that can help me out. I finally got daycare assistance and now I am going back to school this summer to get a degree in human services, so I can better my life for my kids and myself.

I acknowledge that there are people out there who are lazy and don’t want to work so they take MFIP assistance for granted. But there are a lot of people in my situation who abide by all the rules MFIP has. For example: we volunteer or job search 25 hours a week. The volunteering helps us get the experience we need to find a job either at our volunteer site or someplace else; it gives us the experience and work references we need for other employment opportunities. We turn in time cards, paystubs, or anything that our financial workers or employment counselors need. My employment counselor got me into an office works program to update my skills with computers so I can have something recent to put on my resume. I was fortunate to take that program because it landed me with the organization I am doing paid work experience for now.

I don’t plan on being on MFIP for long. I can’t take care of 2 children on $387 a month. I do need the food support and childcare though. I have been working since I was 15 yrs old. I enjoy working but these days you need a degree to get any decent paying job, I intend to find that job but I know I need to finish school and I wouldn’t be able to be going back to school and work if it wasn’t for MFIP and the support systems they help people with in my situation.

If the Governor cuts child care assistance, I won’t be able to go to school or to work. My MFIP check is $387 – it would be $437 but the State takes out $50 because I live in subsidized housing – if the Governor’s proposal passes to cut $100 because of my housing subsidy, I don’t know how I will pay for diapers – you cannot buy diapers with food stamps and I have to pay my rent, utilities, and phone bill, there’s nothing left for my children’s needs.

I don’t have a car. A volunteer driver with AEOA’s Rural Rides program brings me to work every day and brings my children to daycare. The Governor’s budget proposes cutting people off MFIP if they have a car worth $7,500 – He doesn’t understand that I need reliable transportation when I’m driving in cold weather with young children. Besides my monthly budget doesn’t have room to have a fixer-upper that I’m always bringing in for repairs. I don’t have money to buy a car, but it seems crazy to kick me off MFIP if somebody were to donate a car to my family to help us get ahead.

Thank you for listening. All I want for myself and my children is an opportunity to work and go to school and build a life for ourselves. I don’t need hand-outs but I could use a reliable hand-up. If given a chance, I will work hard to be a contributing member of society."

"Good afternoon, My name is Stef and I’m the single mother of two beautiful children. Thank you for being here to hear impacts on the Governor’s proposed budget. My family was directly affected by his 2003 budget cuts to childcare. I made $36.00 a week too much to receive any kind of childcare assistance, leaving me in a dire situation. 3/5 of my weekly paycheck went to pay for childcare. I was left with nothing to feed my kids after rent and utilities were paid.

I made a very difficult choice to leave my employer of 5 years to go back to school to make a better living for my family. Now here I am almost finished with school and living in public housing. I’m working, going to school, and I give back to the community with my time each month. I pay rent and utilities and already there is a 50.00 deduction from my monthly grant just for living in subsidized housing.

Just to give you an idea, this month’s grant is $400. After paying rent that drops to $310 and after utilities it leaves me $210 for the month. Even if I include my income from working I have $410 this month to purchase just the necessities such as toilet paper, laundry soap, garbage bags, diapers, car insurance, phone bill, clothes and shoes for kids and the gas to get to and from school, work, and lets not mention any car repairs that may happen. Now the Governor wants to increase the $50 housing penalty to $100 – that is, people on MFIP who live in subsidized housing will have to pay $100 per MONTH to fix the state’s budget problem. It’s hard to face the reality that another $50.00 could be taken away just because I live in subsidized housing. I would have to work another 7 ½ hours to make $50, which would raise the State’s portion of the daycare bill by $43 for the month. So, the $50 the Governor will take from me, will cost the State an additional $43. It would make more sense to just raise my taxes by $7 a month.

By not raising taxes the Governor’s budget segregates specific groups, like people on MFIP or people who need childcare, or people who need health care, or even just the working class. Raising the income tax would affect all of us equally. I’m happy to pay, but I don’t want a disproportionate part of the cost to fall on my family and on other families in the same or similar situations.

Did you know that effective January 1, 2009, the Food Support (Food Stamp) Program rules changed?

If you have been told in the past that you could only receive three months of Food Support OR were told that you are no longer eligible because you used your three months, you may be eligible to get Food Support until December 31, 2009

Because of changes in the Food Support Program, participation in the Food Support Employment and Training program is now voluntary.

However, if you are interested in volunteering for the Employment and Training Program, talk to your financial worker. Your participation is voluntary, buty may help you access support services such as help with transportation, tools, equipment, supplies, uniforms, clothing suitable for job interviews, as well as other services.

Dan Juhl is the CEO of Juhl Wind, an established leader in community-based wind power throughout the United States & Canada. Dan Juhl has pioneered community-based wind farms and developed the currently accepted financial, operational, and legal structure for providing local ownership of wind farms.
Dan Janisch, Project Manager for Kraus-AndersonConstruction Company, has managed utility scale wind projects throughout the US & Canada, and most recently Taconite Ridge in Mountain Iron. His projects include the Prince Wind Project in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario – Canada’s largest single installation of wind power until 2009. The program serves not only RTH participants but also low-income households that are in need depending upon availability of resources. "Weak economy puts more kids in line for free meals, report says"

"The sagging economy is taking a bite out of federal school-meal subsidies as more students take advantage of free or low-price breakfasts and lunches, nutritionists say in a report released Thursday. About 425,000 more students are participating in the National School Lunch Program, a group reports.The School Nutrition Association surveyed more than 130 school nutrition directors from 38 states to produce its report, "Saved by the Lunch Bell: As Economy Sinks, School Nutrition Program Participation Rises."

The nonprofit organization said that about 425,000 more students are participating in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program in 2008-09 than in the previous school year.

That represents an average increase of 2.5 percent from 2007-08, the report says.
These numbers hold true despite a slight decline in the number of students enrolled in public schools this school year, according to the study.

More than three-quarters of the districts surveyed reported a rise in the number of students eating free meals under the U.S. Department of Agriculture program, the report says.
Many of the school district employees who monitor the food programs complain that the federal subsidies fall far short of the rising costs.

According to the association, the estimated average cost to prepare a school meal is $2.90, but the federal reimbursement is $2.57.

School lunch programs are experiencing a potential loss of at least $4.5 million per school day, based on 30 million school lunches provided, the group says.

The good news, according to association President Katie Wilson, is that "this year, when hunger is more common, more students are able to eat a balanced, nutritious meal at school."

Meals served under the USDA programs must meet nutrition guidelines based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. For lunches, that means no more than 30 percent of calories can come from fat and fewer than 10 percent from saturated fat.

It was an exciting evening in Eveleth tonight. Santa and the Eveleth Fire Department along with many volunteers braved the brisk evening picking up donations for the food drive. Fire trucks and ambulances traveled up and down the streets of Eveleth and West Eveleth. Tonight's food drive was an overwhelming success and will indeed help many families.

Mesabi Range College is pleased to host a Civic Engagement Forum in conjunction with Minnesota Campus Compact. This two-hour regional forum will bring together the five colleges of the Northeast Higher Education District as well as secondary school districts, legislators, and community members. The goal of the forum is to use testimonies to attest to the power of civic engagement programs in enhancing the education of our students and benefiting our communities. A panel response and discussion will identify ways of building on successes and expanding regional impact.

As facilitator of this discussion, we are excited to have Larry Goodwin, President of The College of St. Scholastica and Chair of the Minnesota Campus Compact Board of Directors. We are also thrilled with our five panelists—it’s shaping up to be a dynamic discussion! Mesabi Range College employee Beth Peterson; Liz Kuoppala works as Associate Director of the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless; Chris Ismil is the Program Director for Iron Range Youth in Action; Steve Potts, an instructor at Hibbing Community College; and Dr. Sue Collins will be rounding out the discussion from her unique perspective as NHED’s President.

We will also be joined by the Interim Executive Director of Minnesota Campus Compact, Jim Scheibel. Mr. Scheibel was Mayor of St. Paul from 1990 to 1994. After completing his term as Mayor, Mr. Scheibel served as Vice President of the Corporation for National Service and directed AmeriCorps VISTA as well as the Senior Corps at the during the Clinton administration.

Next Generation Ponders Hope on the Iron Range

At any of the historical sites or mine views on northern Minnesota's Iron Range, an elderly but enthusiastic volunteer will gladly tell you about the past. They will tell you how, in their youth, they crawled over the red, gritty dirt of a mine dump to see pillars of sparks rising off a steam drill into the evening twilight of the 1930s, '40s or '50s.

The past is not past on the Iron Range. It is everywhere.

And that's one reason why so many of my generation, the crazy kids who wore Zubaz pants and listened to Vanilla Ice on purpose, found it hard to grow up on the Iron Range. It's hard for kids to care about the history of where they've already been.

This effect was doubled because the Iron Range children of my generation also saw their homeland as an iceberg melting away under their feet. Starting in the early 1980s with the closure and scuttling of the Butler Taconite mine near Nashwauk, the Iron Range has seen the contraction of jobs, population and prospects. My wife attended elementary school in Nashwauk-Keewatin in 1983 and remembers classmates simply disappearing from one day to the next as families moved quickly to find work elsewhere. Layoffs and downturns persisted through the '80s, '90s and the turn of the century. As long as I can remember, people older than me have been telling me that the old days were better.

An entire generation of Iron Rangers was taught that any person of worth must leave to find fortune, fame and home. I shared that belief during my senior year of high school, eyeing the bright lights of Chicago. The problem with this exodus is the same problem we Iron Range kids found with the red iron-tinted dirt clinging to the undersides of our parents' cars after parties held near secluded mining locations. You can't shake that dirt. You can't shake your home. You can't shake the Iron Range.

The Iron Range grew as an anomaly, a string of quirky mining locations along a jagged, ridiculously abundant iron formation in the thick north woods of Minnesota. More than any other part of the state, it was built by immigrants eager to prove their loyalty to a great country. These people fought each other at first, but learned to fight together against the powerful companies that held them in poverty. Considered radical to many, these early political pioneers sacrificed comfort so that my generation could go to a good school and do whatever we wanted. And though many of my generation wanted to leave to avoid the general malaise of the sinking Range economy, my talks with high school friends always brings up one truth: We are Iron Rangers. That will not change.

On Sept. 19, officials broke ground on the new Essar Steel plant near Nashwauk, not far from where I grew up and now live, and on the same site as the former Butler Taconite plant. The media blitz, talk of hundreds or thousands of jobs, probably gave many the sense that times were changing on the Iron Range.

They are, but as a lifelong Iron Ranger under the age of 30 I have to ask: "Are we, the Butler Taconite generation, ready for the change?"

Suddenly this generation of Iron Rangers raised on Nintendo and pessimism, awash in mass media from all over the world but rooted in a gritty Iron Range sensibility, now must navigate a ship no longer sinking. Handling these new struggles won't be possible until the attitudes we modern Rangers grew up with change to include the genuine possibility of a real and compelling future here on the Range. Like, totally. For real. OMG!

One thing is abundantly clear. We Iron Range children of the 1980s have weathered the storm. The chances of economic prosperity and collapse run about even nowadays. We stand now with our last best hope of diversifying, modernizing and strengthening our row of little towns nestled along a red-stained ridge in the north woods of Minnesota. This opportunity will not come again. What we do with it will determine whether our great-grandchildren will speak of this time with the same reverence now reserved for our past.

Winter Car Survival Kit

Simple Items Every Driver Should Keep in the Car

In the age of good highways, sophisticated cars, and ever-present cell phones, we worry less than ever about the hazards of winter driving. We shouldn’t be so flippant about the risks of winter travel. While the stories of individuals lost in winter storms or trapped or sliding off the road and being trapped in their cars overnight are far less frequent than they once were, we can all be better prepared by simply packing a winter essentials kit in our cars.

Preparation Is Essential

Keep a bag stocked and always present in your trunk or in the cargo compartment just in case of emergency. Purchase a bag expressly for this purpose or simply use a cardboard box, an old travel bag, or a couple of canvas grocery bags. Kits should include, at minimum:

Winter coat, hat, and gloves; ideally a blanket (or more than one) as well
First-aid kit
Some non-perishable food such as granola bars, or crackers; even just some hard candy can help
Strike anywhere matches in a water-tight container
Candles and an empty coffee can to melt snow; a cup is a good idea as well
Flashlight with extra batteries
Small tool kit or at least an all purpose tool
Shovel
Jumper cables
Tire chains

Important Tips

If you are forced off the road or simply have to wait out the worst of the storm, turn on your emergency flashers. Remember to carry your cell phone with you but realize you may not have service. Call for help if you can. Stay with your car. In your car you will be protected from the elements, you’ll stay near the highway, and you will be far more visible. Trying to go for help will only expose you to the elements and increase your chances of getting lost. You could easily be hit by another car if you attempt to walk alongside a highway. Run the engine only for about ten minutes per hour to heat the car and open a window slightly on the side opposite the wind for ventilation.

Be patient. Even in the most remote places, there will be other cars on the road and emergency personnel at work. You’ll be safe, and if you follow these simple suggestions, you’ll be comfortable while you wait for help.

National Night Out

On Tuesday, August 5Th, 2008, 7 blocks in the City of Eveleth joined with many other communities throughout the United States for National Night Out. The overall goal of this event is to build our community by getting to know our neighbors and build a partnership with local police.

This was the 2ND annual National Night Out for the Eveleth Police. The Department was able to send officers and cars to the parties. Children and adults were able to ask questions, get in and touch and learn how the equipment worked. Best of all they built a foundation of communication that might not have been their previously.

The ambulance was able to come to the parties as well. Everyone was welcome to get in, ask questions of the men and women who serve Eveleth every day.

All in all the evenings events were a big success with neighbors getting to know each other for the first time, or all over again.

Mini Grants for girls through the Ann Bancroft Foundation

The Ann Bancroft Foundation is announcing its Fall 2008 round of Dare to Dream minigrants for Minnesota girls age 10 through grade 10. Please note the following when considering a Minnesota girl in your school who is eligible for these grants:

1. Girls must be age 10 through grade 10 and reside in the state of Minnesota.
2.Grants range from $100 to $500 and we must have the exact amount stated for the activity.
3. The application must be filled out completely with all questions answered thoughtfully or it will be disqualified.
4. Application deadline is November 1, 2008.
5. Girls must be a first-time recipient of the grant. If the applicant has received a grant from the Ann Bancroft Foundation in previous rounds, she is no longer eligible.
6. Grants have been given for classes, camps or lessons to improve a skill; outdoor adventures or camps; honors programs; travel with approved schools or groups; choir trips or school activities and more. If you have a question about the applicant’s activity, feel free to contact us at 612-676-9484.
7. Grants will NOT be approved for the purchase or rental of equipment or instruments.
8. We are looking for girls who need more support to realize their potential. Girls need to clearly describe a special interest that has sparked their imagination, creativity, or a dream they may not have thought possible.
9. Girls must have an adult mentor who will guide her through the application process. The mentor must be someone other than an immediate family member and can not be the activity provider.
10. Mentors must answer the required questions and confirm financial need for the applicant.
11. The date(s) of the activity must be included on the application. We will not approve grants for activities already in progress or completed prior to notification of approval to the Minnesota girl by the Foundation.
12. A parent or guardian signature is required.
13. Checks will be made payable to the organization providing the activity listed on the application and mailed to the mentor upon approval. Checks cannot be made payable to individuals or a school or scout troop, therefore the organization providing the activity, a contact name and address must be provided.
14. The decision of the Ann Bancroft Foundation whether or not to make a grant is final. No grant application should be considered approved until the Minnesota girl has been notified in writing that a grant will be issued. Checks will be written for approved grants by December 15, 2008.
15. After the activity is completed, the grantee must provide a written report on her activity experience to the foundation.

Blog puts town on the map

Eveleth, a community in northeastern Minnesota, is known as the home of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and the site of Sen. Paul Wellstone's 2002 plane crash. The mining town has seen tough times lately as its population has dropped from just over 4,000 in 1990 to about 3,600 today. Steady population and economic declines are among the reasons that Eveleth decided to become involved in Horizons, the Northwest Area Foundation's rigorous program - in partnership with Everyday Democracy and the Pew Partnership for Civic Change - aimed at reducing poverty in small rural and reservation communities across the Upper Midwest, Great Plains, and Northwest.

In June 2007, several participants in Eveleth's Horizons program launched a blog as a way to share the information, ideas, and action projects that were bubbling up out of the process. The first post, on June 14, was a reprint of a local newspaper story on the wrap-up of study circles held in Eveleth. Before long, however, the Eveleth Horizons blog was itself turning into a chronicle of happenings in Eveleth - a way to record progress, bring the community together, and provide a valuable service in a town where the traditional weekly newspaper is not available online.

One year later, Eveleth bloggers Stefanie Jarvis, Heather Lindula, and Beth Peterson are going stronger than ever, with nine posts made so far in June. (There were six total in June and July 2007.) The three women are examples of the growing ranks of community bloggers who combine grassroots reporting and leadership skills to be sure the most important local stories are recorded for history. As an example, Eveleth held its community visioning event last November 1. The Eveleth Horizons blog not only promoted the event with several advance posts, but boasted coverage of the actual event the very night it happened.

Also like a good local newspaper, the Eveleth Horizons blog is like a combination scrapbook and bulletin board. Recent posts have featured a bike rodeo (photo at left), a call for election judges, a town clean-up, and a warning against economic stimulus check scams. The blog's left-hand "sidebar" lists "Community Successes," links to local organizations and Horizons partners, "Positive Action Ideas," and shout-outs to local businesses and sponsors that have helped make Horizons and related activities happen. The blog is also packed with photos and it features a colorful calendar (made for free at localendar.com) highlighting local events. In short, in a global 24/7 media culture ruled by breaking news, scandal, and celebrity gossip, the Eveleth Horizons blog is serving as a major source of the news that matters most to the people in Eveleth.

Is it hard to do? Blogger Stefanie Jarvis (who also works, goes to school, and raises two young children) says she has sometimes spent three to four hours a week on the project, but that it's been a good creative outlet. She likes to find new ways to jazz up the blog, such as scrolling text and an "email us" button using code she copied from a MySpace page. It's also cheap: There's no charge for Google's Blogger weblogging tool nor for most of the widgets that are abundantly available on the Internet.

Is it worth it? "Oh absolutely," Stefanie says. "It's one of the best decisions we made early on." Although the blog draws few comments, it has attracted nearly 7,000 visits since the hit counter went up late last summer, and Stefanie says the bloggers frequently get requests that they put a story on the blog. At the town clean-up this spring, about five participants said they read about it on the blog, and people of all ages seem to use it, too.

Bike Rodeo

A Bike Rodeo was held at Southside Park on Saturday, the 21st. The goal is to teach bike safety skills while promoting physical health and exercise. Thanks to the Eveleth Police Department and EMS for the training.
Bikes were available for those who didn't have a bike, helmets were distributed and fixed to be on appropriately.

Thanks to Arrowhead DARE for helping to purchase helmets.

A course was set up to help in learning to manage your bicycle and being able to swerve around objects.
It was an event for the whole family!
Plans are in the works to make this an annual event!

It is time to get out on the bike, go for a bike ride, bring the whole family, and utilize the trails that are avaiable to us!

ELECTION JUDGES
are essential to our democracy. They are officials that serve the voters in the local polling places, administer election procedures, and ensure that the rights of voters are protected on Election Day. Serving as an election judge provides an opportunity to learn about the election process and is an important service to our community.

DUTIES OF ELECTION JUDGES:
* Set up the polling place
* Operate voting equipment
* Direct voters to the correct line
* Register individuals to vote
* Ensure that all qualified voters are permitted to vote
* Demonstrate how to vote
* Distribute ballots to voters
* Assist voters
* Close the polling place
* Determine the results after the polls close
* Certify the polling place results

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION TO BE AN ELECTION JUDGE:
* Eligible to vote in MN
* Able to read, write, and speak English
* Cannot be a spouse, parent, child, or sibling of any election judge serving in the same precinct
* Cannot be a candidate or the spouse, parent, child or sibling of any candidate on the ballot in that precinct
* Must attend training

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS OF AN ELECTION JUDGE:
* Communicate clearly with voters
* Comfortable with assisting and serving a diverse population
* Remain impartial and not exert influence over voters
* Physical and emotional stamina
* attention to detail
* Basic math skill
* Fluency in a second language (not required)

ELECTION JUDGE PAY:
* The wage is set by the local government conducting the election. At least minimum wage is required

TIME OFF FROM EMPLOYMENT:
* You can take time off from work to be an election judge without penalty (M.S. 204B.195)
* You will be provided a from that shows the hours you will work and the hourly pay rate
* Give your employer at least 20 days written notice, attaching the provided hours/pay rate form.
* Your employer can reduce your salary/wages by the amount you are paid for being a judge during the hours you are away from work
* Your employer can restrict the number of persons serving as an election judge to no more than 20 percent of employees at a single work site.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY:
* College students at least 18 years of age can serve as regular election judges.
* High school students aged 16 or older can be trainee election judges.
* Citizens age 16 or older
* Able to read, write and speak English
* Good academic standing in high school or home school
* Haver permission of school and parents
* Special trainee election judge application form available at City Hall or www.evelethmn.com
* Students will be paid

SERVING AS AN ELECTION JUDGE:
* Appointments are made by the City Council
All appointments are made at least 25 days before an election. Most Election Judges are
selected shortly after July 1st.
* If appointed, you must attend training provided by your municipal clerk or county auditor in
July, Augus, September, or October.
* You will be assigned to work with several other elction judges in a polling place
* Election judges may be asked to serve in the precinct where they live or elsewhere in the city.
* Serve on Primary Day, September 9, 2008, and General Election Day, November 4, 2008

Range Women's Advocates is always in need of cell phones. The phones are cleared of information and then provided to individuals to use in case of an emergency.

Eveleth is Cleaner Today

Eveleth is a cleaner city today, Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 9am volunteers gathered in the Auditorium parking lot, to get their assignments and headed out to clean up streets and alley's. About 60 volunteers were in the streets of Eveleth, the Elementary school, Skate Park in Southside Park, United States Hockey Hall of Fame Museum, and Downtown Eveleth picking up trash. After the clean up we all enjoyed a BBQ inside the Fire Hall. We had a hula hoop contest, side walk chalk art, fire truck tour and fellowship with each other. Plans were made to do it again in the fall.

Everyone was busy getting to know one another and which zone they were headed to.

Who have sat in rocking chairs for hours on end soothing crying babies who can't be comforted.

This is for all the mothers who show up at work with spit-up in their hair and milk stains on their blouses and diapers in their purse.

For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes. And for all the mothers who DON'T.

This is for the mothers who gave birth to babies they'll never see. And for the mothers who took those babies and gave them homes.

This is for the mothers whose priceless art collections are hanging on their refrigerator doors.

And for all the mothers who froze their buns on metal bleachers at football or soccer games instead of watching from the warmth of their cars. And when their kids asked, 'Did you see me, Mom?' they could say, 'Of course, I wouldn't have missed it for the world,' and mean it.

This is for all the mothers who yell at their kids in the grocery store and swat them in despair when they stomp their feet and scream for ice cream before dinner. And for all the mothers who count to ten instead, but realize how child abuse happens.

This is for all the mothers who sat down with their children andexplained all about making babies. And for all the (grand)mothers who wanted to, but just couldn't find the words.

This is for all the mothers who go hungry, so their children can eat.

For all the mothers who read 'Goodnight, Moon' twice a night for a year. And then read it again, 'Just one more time.'

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to tie their shoelaces before they started school. And for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead.

This is for all the mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot.

This is for every mother whose head turns automatically when a little voice calls 'Mom?' in a crowd, even though they know their own offspring are at home -- or even away at college -- or have their own families.

This is for all the mothers who sent their kids to school with stomach aches, assuring them they'd be JUST FINE once they got there, only to get calls from the school nurse an hour later asking them to please pick them up. Right away.

This is for mothers whose children have gone astray, who can't find the words to reach them.

For all the mothers who bite their lips until they bleed when their 14 year olds dye their hair green.

For all the mothers of the victims of recent school shootings, and the others of those who did the shooting. For the mothers of the survivors, and the mothers who sat in front of their TVs in horror, hugging their child who just came home from school, safely.

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to be peaceful, and now pray they come home safely from a war.

What makes a good mother anyway? Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips? The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt, all at the same time? Or is it in her heart? Is it the ache she feels when she watches her son or daughter disappear down the street, walking to school alone for the very first time? The jolt that takes her from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 2 A.M. to put her hand on the back of a sleeping baby? The panic, years later, that comes again at 2 A.M. when she just wants to hear their key in the door and know they are safe again in her home? Or the need to flee from wherever she is and hug her child when she hears news of a fire, a car accident, a child dying?

The emotions of motherhood are universal and so our thoughts are for young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep deprivation...And for mature mothers learning to let go. For working mothers and stay-at-home mothers. Single mothers and married mothers. Mothers with money, mothers without. This is for you all... Hang in there. In the end we can only do the best we can. Tell them every day that we love them. And pray and never stop being a mother...

DON’T GET CAUGHT IN A REBATE CHECK SCAM!

The government started sending out the economic stimulus payments (rebate
checks). There are already people out there trying to steal your money!!

THE PHONE SCAM: You might get a phone call from someone
who says they are an employee of the IRS. They ask you for your
social security number and bank account numbers. They say the
IRS needs the information to process the rebate money into your
account.

THE TRUTH: The IRS uses your information from your tax return,
they do not call or e-mail anyone.
If someone calls and says they work for the IRS, hang up the phone.
THE E-MAIL SCAM: You might get an e-mail that looks like it
is from the IRS about the "2008 Economic Stimulus Refund."
The e-mail tells you to click on a link and fill out a form to have
your money put directly into your bank account. Do not click
on anything! The scammers are just trying to get your
personal information!!

THE TRUTH: You do not have to fill out a form to get a
rebate check or have it deposited directly into your account. If you asked for direct deposit on your tax return then your rebate check will automatically go into your account. If you did not list your account information on your tax return, you will get a check in the mail.

If you get an e-mail that says it is from the IRS, delete it.

Achieve Scholarship Program

The new Achieve Scholarship program is designed to address two critical barriers to college attendance: lack of academic preparation and financial access. High school graduates who complete any one of four sets of courses defined as rigorous earn a one-time scholarship of $1,200 to help pay for college at a public or private university or college. The Achieve scholarship, which was proposed by Governor Tim Pawlenty in January 2007 and signed into law in May, is available to students who graduate after January 1, 2008.
To be eligible, a student must:
*Have a parental adjusted gross income of less than $75,000 reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the academic year during which the scholarship is requested (this limit also applies to the adjusted gross income reported for independent students)
*Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
*Meet the definition of Minnesota resident used for state financial aid programs
*Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
*Attend an eligible public or private postsecondary institution in Minnesota.
*Apply for the scholarship no later than 30 days after the term starts
*Successfully complete the first term of college enrollment in order to receive the second $600 installment of the Achieve Scholarship
*Complete one of the four sets of rigorous programs of study while in high school or in a home-school setting described below

Rigorous Programs of Study

1. A set of courses similar to the State Scholars Initiative with a grade of 'C' or above in each course:
*Four years of English;
*Three years of math (including Algebra I and a higher level course such as Algebra II, geometry, or data analysis and statistics);
*Three years of science (including at least two courses from biology, chemistry or physics);
*Three years of social studies; and
*One year of a foreign language.

2. Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and test scores:
This program requires a minimum of two Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses in high school and a minimum passing score on the exams for those classes. Students must score 3 or higher on AP exams and 4 or higher on IB exams.

3. Minnesota Coursework Requirements with a grade of 'C' or above in each course:
*Four years of language arts;
*Three years of math, including one year each of geometry and two years of algebra, one of which is intermediate or advanced algebra;
*Three years of science including one year each of a biological and physical science;
*Three years of social studies; and
*Two years of a single foreign language.

4. Minnesota Dual Credit Program:
With a passing grade of 'B' or better: High school students taking BOTH a math course (Algebra 2 level or higher) AND a science course (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) under the Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program worth a total of at least 6 college credits.

Students must first graduate from high school
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Download and complete the Achieve Scholarship application (.pdf)
Submit the application to the Office of Higher Education along with an official high school transcript

The White House Project

Roughly 160 women of all ages joined together for The White House Project at Fortune Bay the weekend of the April 11-13.

Working with an advisory committee of women leaders from across
the Arrowhead Region, the training brought together an
extraordinarily diverse group of women from over 55 cities and
townships, spanning 14 Northern MN Counties. One-third of the
participants were Native-American, representing seven different
tribes.
