National Night Out

On Tuesday, August 5Th, 2008, 7 blocks in the City of Eveleth joined with many other communities throughout the United States for National Night Out. The overall goal of this event is to build our community by getting to know our neighbors and build a partnership with local police.

This was the 2ND annual National Night Out for the Eveleth Police. The Department was able to send officers and cars to the parties. Children and adults were able to ask questions, get in and touch and learn how the equipment worked. Best of all they built a foundation of communication that might not have been their previously.

The ambulance was able to come to the parties as well. Everyone was welcome to get in, ask questions of the men and women who serve Eveleth every day.

All in all the evenings events were a big success with neighbors getting to know each other for the first time, or all over again.

Should the child move outside the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota service area, he/she automatically exits the program.

StoryCorps coming to Grand Rapids Aug 29-Sept. 20

An interesting article from Hometownfocus.us

What is StoryCorps?
Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to take home and share, and is archived for generations to come at the Library of Congress. Millions listen to the award-winning broadcasts on public radio and the Internet. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, creating a growing portrait of who we really are as Americans.

StoryCorps seeks first and foremost to create meaningful experiences within families and among friends. In soundproof StoryCorps booths and quiet rooms, the collective wisdom of everyday Americans is being preserved with skill, grace and dignity. At its best, the project teaches us to be better listeners and helps us appreciate the importance of the stories all around us. A small percentage of StoryCorps interviews are excerpted for nation broadcast on NPR on the web, and via podcast.

How can you be involved?Start thinking about and talking with people you care about that you'd like to interview. Reservations open on August 12. StoryCorps sets up the interviews and you can call for your date/time, 800-850-4406. You can also go online on August 12 to make a reservation
